A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
