Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
